The Robert W. Halfhill papers (1956-2011) are composed of clippings, subject files, financial records, organizational records, correspondence, personal writing, and ephemera. Coverage is given to the Act Up Minnesota – Gay Liberation Front and Halfhill’s prisoner support work, Halfhill’s personal papers, as well as subject files documenting AIDS activism, GLBT activism, and topics of personal interest to Robert Halfhill. Covered extensively is Halfhill’s work as an activist for Act Up and his efforts to assist prisoners living with AIDS. In addition, materials include documentation of Halfhill’s involvement with organizations as secretary and treasurer, personal campaigns for city council and state senate, correspondence and personal writings.

Michael McConnell was born in 1942, grew up in Oklahoma, and received his Master’s degree in Library Science in the early 1960s. He met Jack Baker in Norman, Oklahoma in 1966. Jack Baker is a gay activist. His marriage to Michael McConnell in 1971 sparked controversy; they were the first same-sex couple to be married legally with a license that was never revoked. Their wedding became the earliest same-sex marriage ever to be recorded in the public files of any civil government. In late 1971, the Minnesota Supreme Court in Baker v. Robert Halfhill was born in Kentucky in 1942. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he completed an undergraduate degree in philosophy. While at the University, Halfhill became involved in the nascent and rapidly evolving gay rights movement in the Twin Cities.
